It’s time we stopped considering ourselves as the pinnacle of evolution, chimps have evolved more than you or me.
Evolutionary geneticist Jianzhi Zhang and his colleagues at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, have been comparing 13,888 human, chimp and rhesus macaque genes. 233 of chimp genes and only 154 human genes have changed since we parted from a common ancestor some 6 million years ago.
Perhaps the development of civilization and the ability for humans to use and create tools has reduced the need for humans to evolve. While survival of the fittest is true in some areas of the world, in developed countries the average person does not need to be able to hunt a boar or run from predators.
So just remember when you’re visting the zoo next; the chimp in the cage looking bac at you is at the pinnacal of natural evolution.
