Some psychology on lotto numbers

General Add comments

Picking the lotto numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 will give exactly the same odds of winning as any other combination. You know this yet when it comes to picking you’re more likely to spread the numbers out, ranging from high to low. We believe this to be the more logical choice as the balls in the machine go from 0 to 49 (in the UK at least), coming out 1,2,3 etc. seems hugely unlikely.

Which would you pick?

8, 15, 18, 23, 32, 46
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

Assuming this has never happened before (assumption saves me the effort of researching thousands of combinations) it doesn’t reduce the chances of it coming next. A machine running 24/7 for the rest of time will eventually produce every possible combination.

No matter how often a certain number comes out, it is no more likely than any other. Unfortunately this means it is completely impossible to predict the winning numbers with any degree of certainty.
