Breaking news!
It seems a rebellion is occurring over at Digg.com as users fill the front page with meaningless stories.
The users of Digg are acting in a backlash over deletion of stories and users throughout the site. News about people’s favourite colours and md5 encoded passwords are being dugg right to the top like crazy.
The story submission page is not viewable at this time.
Jay Adelson has posted in the digg blog about the issue concerned, the HD-DVD encryption key being cracked and publicised on the site left staff no choice but delete the stories.
“Our goal is always to maintain a purely democratic system for the submission and sharing of information - and we want Digg to continue to be a great resource for finding the best content. However, in order for that to happen, we all need to work together to protect Digg from exposure to lawsuits that could very quickly shut us down.”
It seems the major flaw in a website like Digg has reared it’s head. It was inevitable that some posts would need to be censored eventually but this time it could be one step too far. Legally Digg has both the right and the responsibility to remove articles sharing illegal content (cracked HD-DVD keys for example) but the community has long voiced it’s opposition to censors. This time Digg may have pushed them too far.
