Goodbye Page Views - NetRaitings prefers Total Time Spent

Blogging, General Add comments

NetRaitings has announced they plan to stop providing page views for rankings saying time spent on the page and number of visits is more accurate in the day of AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML).

While I agree that it would be better to rank websites this way when using AJAX (Which can load content without refreshing a page) I’m willing to bet 90% or more websites either don’t use the technology at all or just as elements like article ratings.

It’s not the time to be making such a switch in my opinion, perhaps in 5 years time when AJAX is more prevalent, but right now it can only harm the majority of websites online.
